What’s your business blind spot?
Running a business is no mean feat. Everything rests on your shoulders, from developing sales leads, managing compliance, to hiring and managing your team.
Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses.
However objective you think you are, if you’re directing your own business, there will be a blind spot holding you back. You can't be across everything at the same time, and that’s ok.
Blind spots, like bias, can be conscious or subconscious. You might know some of yours already, and they might include:
📈 Financial reporting
💾 System implementation
📣 Marketing strategy
📲 Social media management
📑 Contract law
🎤 Public speaking
📟 How to get Excel to just DO THE THING
But your blind spot might also be:
💭 The person who isn’t performing
💭 The person who is performing, but seems to attract conflict or misunderstanding
💭 Your team’s engagement levels, and how they’re affecting results
💭 That you’ve hired people, but don’t know your obligations as an employer
💭 That you’re not hiring people, despite trying
If a business is unaware of its blind spots, it can spell trouble. A lack of knowledge or awareness of a certain area could lead to less than prudent decision making, costing a company opportunity, capital, and in some cases reputation.
For many entrepreneurs, the biggest blind spot is their people, either getting the best from them or the mechanics of employment. And it’s not surprising, with woolly and constantly changing legislation, and the myriad complexities that people bring with them to work.
It’s no secret that the cost of getting your people management wrong can be staggering. A recent employment tribunal awarded almost £54,000 to an employee who was ruled to have been discriminated against and unfairly dismissed due to the company’s failure to fairly handle a redundancy process; another awarded over £17,000 to an employee who was ruled to have been constructively unfairly dismissed after a change in working hours and subsequent grievance were mishandled by the employer.
Put your Specsavers vouchers to one side (other providers of employee eye care schemes are available), because this isn’t something a new pair of glasses can fix.
